출애굽기 11-16장 말씀 묵상

And when your children ask you, 'What does this ceremony mean to you?' then tell them, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.' " Then the people bowed down and worshiped......All the Israelites did just what the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions......On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.' This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that the law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. (출애굽기 12장 26-27절 / 50-51절 / 13장 8-9절)

하나님은 모든 기적들을 뒤로 하고 가장 마지막에는 이집트 사람들의 장자를 앗아가는 일을 일으키신다. 그건 아마도 그것이 가장 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 보여주시는 임팩트가 명확하고 컸을 뿐 아니라 이스라엘 사람들에게 이집트를 벗어난 이후 하나님을 기억하도록 하는 날을 만들어 놓으시기 위함일 것이다. 하나님은, 그들이 얼마나 하나님을 쉽게 잊을지를 아셨기 때문에. 

당시에 그들이 하나님을 기억할 수 있는 수단이 무엇이 있었겠나? 성경이 있었던 것도 아니다. 그들은 기억과 구전에 주로 의지해서 하나님을 기억해야 했을 것이다. 그렇다면 확실한, 명확한 기록을 남기셔야 했을 것이다. 단순히 당시에 살았던 이들을 위한 것이 아니다. 그때부터 지금까지, 수 천년의 역사 동안 남길, 하나님께서 하나님 되심을, 보여주고 입증하는 사건을 남기기 위한 하나님의 선택이셨다. 

혹자는 너무 잔혹한 것이 아니냐고, 어떻게 사람의 목숨을 하나님께서 앗아가시느냐고 물을지도 모른다. 그런데 그건 하나님께서 잔혹하신 것이 아니라 인간 안에 있는 악함이 그만큼 크기 때문이다. 그정도 사건이 아니면, 그 정도 기적이 아니면 인간은 하나님을 하나님으로 여기고 믿지 못하기 때문에. 우리의 악함이, 의심이 그만큼 크기 때문에 그렇게 하실 수밖에 없으셨던 것이다.

이걸 다 직접 겪은 이스라엘 사람들도 광야로 들어간지 얼마 지나지 않아 하나님께서 하나님 되심을 잊고 만다. 인간은 그런 존재다. 그리고 하나님은 그걸 아시기에 이런 사건을 일으키실 수밖에 없었을 것이다. 이마저도 없었다면, 우린 지금 하나님을 기억하지도 못했을 것이고, 예수님께서 이 땅에 오시지도 못하셨을 것이다. 

 

When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, 'If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.' ......As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the LORD. They said to Moses, 'Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!" ......The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, "If only we had died by the LORD's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death." (출애굽기 13장 17절 / 14장 10-12절 / 16장 1-3절)

하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 어떤 존재인지 너무나도 잘 아셨다. 그래서 파라오의 마음을 강팍하게 하여 하나님께서 하나님 되심을 드러냈지만, 이스라엘 백성들은 또 다시 마음을 돌릴 것을 알고 계셨다. 그래서 하나님은 팔레스타인 지역이 아닌 우회로를 통해 그들이 가게 하셨다. 

파라오의 군대가 쫓아오는 소식, 그리고 그 군대를 하나님께서 홍해에 묻으신 후에 이스라엘 백성들이 보이는 모습은 하나님의 우려가, 기우가 아니었음을 보여준다. 이스라엘 백성들은 자신들이 겪은 것은 잊어버리고 다시 모세와 아론, 그리고 하나님에 대해서 불평하기 시작했다.

우리는 어떠한가? 조금만 힘들고 인생이 내 마음대로 되지 않으면 그렇게 반응하지 않나? 우리는 이스라엘 백성들과 얼마나 다른가? 크게 다르지 않다. 그러지 않을 수 있도록 노력해야 한다.
